Bo Yao

Bo YaoBo received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. degree in computer science from Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Guilin, China, and obtained his Ph.D. at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex.  He obtained full Ph.D scholarship from University of Essex for his doctoral research and M.Eng scholarship from Guilin University of Electronic Technology for his Master study. His research was about fuzzy logic and video analysis & processing in intelligent environments and specifically to track and analyze human(users) behavior and gestures for further detecting important events in intelligent environments such as intelligent classroom, intelligent living room and intelligent campus so that according services can be provided instantly.

His research was part of the ScaleUp project, a research collaboration between the University of Essex, UK and King Abdul-Aziz University, KSA which aims to scale-up existing technology in intelligent inhabited environments from smaller facilities to a complete campus with multi-story large footprint buildings.

Bob had been employed as a research manager in a surveillance company for 3 years before his Ph.D. career. During the period, his group developed one series of the earliest smart CCTV cameras in China, including smart cameras for traffic management, home & building security. And he had worked as engineer and research assistant for 4 years in the Research Center of Image Processing in his university.

His main research interests include fuzzy logic, image & video analysis, human detection and tracking, event detection, human behavior analysis, embedded vision system, E-Learning, robotics, and CCTV surveillance security.
